The Re Institute is pleased to present the show Double Portrait, curated by Joshua Rosenblatt. Joshua has recently been traveling to Arizona to be with his son and new grandchild. His practice of drawing has been a part of these visits. This show comes out of his thinking about the relationships he is drawing. The emotions of son, grandchild and self all led him to these thoughts about the content of his drawings.

Statement from the curator, Joshua Rosenblatt:

The figure, the artist and me. The three of us are together in a room when I look at a portrait. Through the artist, a direct path of understanding is created between the figure and the viewer, and a simple balance is maintained.

When another figure is added, suddenly there are paths to follow in many directions. The relationship is no longer an interaction between the viewer and figure, but now includes a conversation/relationship? within the artwork between the two figures.

Four is not a crowd. In a double portrait, there is the artist, the viewer and two figures. The presence of this additional figure provides a very different experience from that of a portrait of a solitary figure, or portrait of a larger group. Through the artist’s eyes, the figure-to-figure dynamic in a double portrait allows the viewer to share in an intimate moment, breaking a barrier. Barrier removed, the viewer may question what kind of relationship they are being allowed to witness? Are these strangers? How might they be related? What tensions does each character bury and/or present in the image?

This group of five artists all share storylines about the power-of-four, allowing the viewer to finish the storytelling of each piece.
