The leonard and joel {and eve (and bowie)} show started in the bronx fifty years ago. no!! yes!!!! in the gym at bronx science the first day of high school...no one knew anyone. we came from all over the city -- you had to be smart to get in -- we were supposed to help about sputnik-- but most of our parents were immigrants or second generation shopkeepers and such. but on the gym floor we, who weren't going to let those russians beat us, were arranged in files and they passed out our permanent record cards to us yelling : don't look at anything except the name and address to make sure they're right ---- permanent record cards???!!! as in that will go on your?????!!! what we knew were following us around like rabid dogs going to kill us with hydrophobia but had never seen before ever!!!??? oh god -- don't look???!!! we looked....... and leonard ragouzeous, bowler --- alphabetically in front of joel schapira, basketball player --- turned saying, horrified and hurt : "mildly obese??????!!!!! joel schapira replied: no way! and quietly pondered the most glaring entry on his own card: meddlesome mother. leonard and joel did not become friends then. that happened later --35 years later -- after they'd both married, raised children, and become artists. wait -- what about sputnik? nothing, that's what. artfriends and recent collaborators, they are most pleased to have you view the fruits, current and not, of their devotion to making the impermanent at least semi permanent, to making the ephemeral stand still just long enough for us all to get a glimpse.
